Lost Comet 85P/Boethin
12.18.2008  15:00

If you are so inclined to try and find the "lost" comet 85P/Boethin, last seen during its discovery flyby starting in 1975, its expected location is shown in the graphics below. Its maximum visual magnitude of 7 is supposed to occur in December 2008 (right now), visible with optical aids in North America in the evening after the sun sets. Since it cannot be spotted and is thought to have possibly broken up however, it obviously is not magnitude 7.

This is a close-up of where the comet is supposed to be on December the 19th, 2008. (Comet is the grey symbol)

And this is a complete sky map for December 19, 2008 with the comet expected location included. It will be traveling towards the East over the next several months, and getting further and further away.

Also worth noting is that the EPOXI spacecraft was slated to rendezvous with this comet this month, but obviously since NASA could not confirm its continued existence they scratched that plan for another comet flyby in 2010: comet Hartley 2.
