Double Moon Shadow Transit across Jupiter
05.16.2009  18:10

Tonight Jupiter's Galileon moons Callisto and Io will transit the disk of Jupiter. It is very difficult to see the moons themselves when they are in front of Jupiter, but what is special is that their shadows will also fall on the planet Jupiter simultaneously for a few hours. It is much easier to see the shadows track across the planet, and I have seen a single moon transit once with my humble 70mm refractor.

The Sky and Telescope Jupiter moons utility tells exactly when each moon shadow transit starts and ends:

Moon EventTime (UTC)
Callisto's shadow begins to cross Jupiter5/17/2009 04:38
Io's shadow begins to cross Jupiter5/17/2009 07:52
Callisto's shadow leaves Jupiter's disk5/17/2009 09:36
Io's shadow leaves Jupiter's disk5/17/2009 10:14
